Pros & Cons About Living in Calgary
Calgary offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty. For those considering a move or simply curious about what it’s like to live here, Calgary has a lot to offer. Let’s dive into the pros and cons of calling this vibrant city home.
The Pros of Living in Calgary
1. Proximity to Nature
One of Calgary’s greatest assets is its location. The city is just a short drive away (okay, maybe like 1-1.5hours depending on where you live in the city) from some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Canada, including Banff, Jasper, and Kananaskis. Whether you’re into hiking, skiing, or simply enjoying the mountain views, Calgary serves as the perfect home base for outdoor adventures.
2. Affordable Housing (Compared to Other Major Cities)
While housing prices in Canada’s largest cities continue to soar, Calgary offers a relatively affordable market. You can find spacious homes and modern condos at prices that provide more value for your money compared to other metropolitan areas. Imagine not having to live off instant noodles for the rest of your life to keep up with mortgage payments!
3. Quality of Life
Calgary consistently ranks high on global livability indexes. We’ve got clean streets, safe neighbourhoods, and an [excellent] public transit system (so I’ve been told). Combined with its low crime rate, Calgary provides an enviable quality of life.
4. Sunshine Galore
Did you know Calgary is one of Canada’s sunniest cities? I mean, if sunshine were a currency Calgary would be filthy rich. With over 300 days of sunshine annually, it’s hard not to feel energized and motivated. Even in the winter months, the sun often shines brightly with clear skies, making the cold more bearable.
5. A Thriving Food Scene
Calgary’s food scene has been by far the best I’ve experienced so far! (That should mean something coming from someone who’s lived in the big city her whole life, don’t cha think? Where my foodies at?!). From cozy spots serving the best comfort food to innovative farm-to-table restaurants, there’s something for every palate. Plus, the city’s love for craft breweries and local eats makes dining out feel like a foodie adventure. Bow Valley Ranch Restaurant & Teatro Ristorante to name a couple of my fave spots!
6. Family-Friendly Environment
Calgary is a fantastic place to raise a family. With excellent schools, abundant parks, and family-oriented activities, kids have plenty of opportunities to thrive. The Calgary Zoo, Telus Spark Science Centre (Your kids might not thank you now, but they will someday), and Heritage Park are just a few examples of the city’s kid-friendly attractions.
The Cons of Living in Calgary
1. Winters
Calgary’s winters can be long and cold, with temperatures often dropping wellllllllll below freezing — see me last post to get an idea. However, the city does experience Chinooks—a warm, dry wind that can melt snow and provide a welcome break from the cold. Let’s not forget how Calgary’s sunshine changes the winter vibe from cold and miserable, to fun and bearable. Read more about the Calgary Winters in my last blog post.
2. Urban Sprawl
Calgary’s layout is expansive — and is growing quite rapidly— which means you may spend more time commuting if you live far from your workplace or frequent destinations. While the public transit system is reliable, some areas lack convenient access.
3. Limited Nightlife: More chill, less thrill
While Calgary’s arts and dining scenes are vibrant, the nightlife is more chill compared to some other major cities. If you’re someone who thrives on late-night clubbing or an extensive bar scene, Calgary might feel a bit quieter. No one 30+ is up passed 10pm anyways, so hey this could be your vibe!
4. Unpredictable Weather
Calgary’s weather is famously unpredictable. It’s not uncommon to experience sunshine, rain, and snow all in one day. Being prepared for rapid changes is a must when living here. Dressing in layers isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a survival skill.
Is Calgary right for you?
Ultimately, Calgary’s pros far outweigh its cons for many people. Its combination of natural beauty, economic opportunities, and high quality of life make it a standout city in Canada. Whether you’re here for the mountains, the career growth, or the cowboy hats, Calgary is ready to welcome you with open arms… and maybe a cracked windshield.
